Charlotte Stirling-Reed's Top Tips for Healthier Kids' Party Food

Think colour – so many foods are colourful and can really make a party food table pop. Think red peppers, blueberries, cucumber, mango pieces and even colouful pastas work well.

Bring it all out together – cakes, savoury and in-between and let little ones pick at what they want. Little foodies love a bit of autonomy around food choices.

Don’t sweat it - having more salt and sugar than they normally have on the odd occasion isn’t going to be a problem. Try not to over-restrict or pressurise your little one to eat certain foods at the party as it may backfire.

Make plenty of snack-y on the go options like muffins, flapjacks, crackers so excitable children aren’t expected to sit down for a full meal.

If it’s going to be their main meal that day then think about quirky ways to add balance – e.g. fruit in the jelly, veggies in the flapjacks, eggs in the muffins etc.

Serve foods like crisps and biscuits in mini bags so they aren’t unlimited (but don’t overly show restriction towards them).

Make foods easy to grab and eat, so cut them up into the right shapes and sizes for little hands to hold.

Add funny extras to capture their imagination – googly eyes, fruit and veggies chopped into shapes, little flags popped into muffins and sandwiches, can all help make the food more appealing.

Try one of my healthy birthday cake options for babies – the Birthday Cake Pancake Stack is always a winner!
